Canadian Credit Checks
Credit should be important to everyone. By credit I am not speaking of credit cards. I am speaking of credit history. Everyone, like it or not, has a credit history. Your credit history is reflective of your lifestyle. As a citizen or Canada and as business owners it is important to know about Canadian credit checks.
Canadian credit checks can be run on those who are looking to open a new line of credit. In fact, as a business owner it is a wise idea to look into your clients' credit history before granting them a new line of credit.
Credit checks can tell you a lot. You should check your own credit on a regular basis. Checking your credit history can benefit you in a couple of ways. If someone has gotten a hold of vital information and has charged items in your name, you will be able to catch it and dispute it. Also, if a creditor has made a mistake you will be able to catch that, report it and then dispute it.
There are a few options as far as where to go for credit checks. There is Equifax. They are based in the United States, but have a branch in Canada. Their website is www.equifax.com/EFX_Canada
Secondly you can get a credit report from Trans Union Canada. They offer commercial as well as individual credit checks. Their website is http://www.tuc.ca/TUCorp/home.asp
The third option for obtaining your credit check is Northern Credit Bureaus. This company is in operation only in Canada. They also offer commercial and individual credit reports. Their website is http://www.creditbureau.ca
Though these reports are not free, they can be very valuable to you in assuring that your identity is safe and that you have not been given a bad rating for debts that you did not incur.
All of the credit checks will include the same information. Following is the information that you should see on your credit check:
- Name, address and other identifiers such as birth date and social insurance number
- Organizations and other people who have requested the file in the last three years
- Banking information and credit history for the last six years
- Public record and other past transactions for the last six years.
